Persuasive Argument

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, Mr. Hyde has murdered Sir Danvers Carew and should be put in jail. He did a horrible crime and needs to be put away so he doesnt do it again. This man has problems in the mind and we cant take the chance of this happening again. If the victim was someone related to you, you would want him to go to jail under any circumstances. I believe that we should to the right thing and have Mr. Hyde put in jail.

  1. For this writing assignment you must understand that you are to write from the point of view of an attorney speaking directly to the jury (Victorian citizens) trying to convince them that Hyde is not guilty (as per your choice above). Just as with any other writing, you need to craft an introductory and closing statement that is both powerful and captivating. The middle of your writing/speech should reveal your reasons for Hyde's innocence (separated by paragraphs). Inside each body paragraph remember that you need to fully support the reasons by recalling all of the evidence, witnesses, and other facts that help prove your point of view. Try watching some courtroom TV dramas or view some youtube clips of courtroom closing statements in order to get a feel for the language and phrases that are common in this type of writing/speech. This will help to give your writing authenticity.
